March 7, 2022: WORKSHOP AND MEETING
In-Person Workshop at Severna Park Community Center with Quilter and Bead Artist Judy Shapiro
9:00 a.m - 3:30 p.m.
In-person Workshop ($40)
What is "Broderie Perse"? It is loosely translated as Persian embroidery. It all started in the latter part of the 18th century in the United States as a way to take design elements from one fabric, cut them out and mix together with other design elements on a background fabric. It has been noted that appliquer's fabric is always in pieces or sporting large holes since saving fabric is not the object of the game!
Here is your opportunity to dig out those wonderful large flower prints, animal prints, leaf prints and other large prints that you have been collecting over the years. I look at it as "flower arranging" on fabric. You may decide to use traditional/historical fabric or use fabrics from Kaffe Fassett or other contemporary designers lines.
You can decide whether you would like to hand or machine applique. In either case Judy will work with you on your stitches, hand or machine, should you not be a confident stitcher. Either method is beautiful.
Guild Meeting, 7:00 -9:00 pm

2-Day Workshop: What is a Map?
Sunday, April 3, 2022: 1-6 pm and Monday, April 4, 2022: 9 am - 3:30 pm

Details about the two-day workshop:
map (map), mapped, mapping, n. 1. a drawing representing selected features of the earth's surface or part of it. 2. a map like drawing of anything: a highway way, a weather map
Maps are intriguing as an art form and as a vehicle for artistic expression. They are personal explorations of map language and imagined landscapes. Through satellite imagery sites like Google maps -- almost any place can be translated into an exquisite mixed media Cartographic Quilt.
Name a favorite place. Is it in your city, your state, the USA or somewhere far away? In this class, you can design a cartographic map of a favorite location such as your residence or birth place.
Discover the possibilities of creating a map from fabric, paint and thread!
Using a fun and simple series of painted and collaged, mixed- media techniques, you will create a mixed media fiber art map. The instructor will guide you through a series of steps that will provide opportunities to learn about design while giving you the freedom to experiment within a structured framework.
Important Note: This class requires students to bring a map of their chosen favorite place. Some pre-planning and communication between teacher and student will be required to ensure the map selected is appropriate for this workshop.
